If you’re not sure whether your organisation is ready for a full on data project (or even what “ready” means) you’re not alone. Many of the organisations we work with are doing amazing work but feel unsure about how to get started with improving how they work with their data. That’s where our Data Maturity Assessment comes in.

This standalone service helps you understand where your organisation sits when it comes to data, what’s working well, what’s holding you back, and what your options are moving forward. It’s low-pressure and designed to support good decision-making whether or not you decide to build a data platform straight away.

Who it’s for

This service is ideal for organisations that are:

  • exploring how to use data more strategically

  • tired of spreadsheets and manual reports but unsure what’s next

  • interested in funding, dashboards, or storytelling, but feel underprepared

  • keen to improve but want to start with clarity, not complexity

You might be calling this your “pre-planning stage,” “scoping,” or just “getting our act together.” Whatever language you use, we’re here to help.

What the assessment covers

We look at your organisation’s data maturity across five key areas:

  1. Strategy - How well is data embedded in your planning, decision-making, and impact measurement?

  2. People and culture - Do your teams feel confident using data? Are roles and responsibilities clear?

  3. Data and tools - How is your data collected, stored, accessed, and maintained? What systems are in use?

  4. Governance and privacy - Are there policies, controls, and processes in place to keep data safe and trustworthy?

  5. Use and insight - How often is data used for reporting, service design, funding, or advocacy? Are insights being shared across teams?

We ask thoughtful questions, without any judgment. It’s not a test. It’s a conversation to build clarity and set a shared understanding of where you are now. We’ve designed our approach to be simple, supportive and strategic.

Data Maturity Assessment process
Data Maturity Assessment process

Step 1: Kick off yarn (30 mins)

We start with a call to understand your goals, constraints, and what you’re hop ing to learn. We’ll explain the process and tailor the assessment to your organisation’s context. Set up times and locations for the facilitated sessions with your team and walk you through the tool we use to build the final recommendations, you and the team have a heads up on the content of the discussion.

Step 2: Guided assessment (1–3 hours)

We facilitate a structured session with representatives from across your organisation. The session can be run online or in person and is designed to be collaborative, inclusive, and easy to follow, even for people who don’t work directly with data.

To get the most value from the session, we recommend including a mix of voices:

  • An executive or people leader who understands your organisation’s goals, strategic priorities, and the broader vision for growth or service improvement

  • A technical representative (such as someone who manages your systems, CRM, or IT platforms), who can speak to your current tools, capabilities, and constraints

  • A frontline or operational staff member who regularly captures, enters, or uses data in day-to-day work, such as for reporting, service delivery, or advocacy.

These different perspectives help us build a more accurate and well-rounded view of your current maturity. It also creates shared understanding across your team and helps identify where support or alignment may be needed.

Step 3: Analysis and mapping

We analyse the responses and map your organisation’s data maturity across the key domains. We highlight strengths, risks, and opportunities using a visual framework that’s easy to share with your leadership, board, or funders.

Step 4: Direction and options report

You receive a short, actionable report that includes:

  • your data maturity profile

  • priority areas for investment or change

  • a set of realistic next steps (which may or may not involve a platform build)

  • optional pathways if you’re considering grant applications, internal funding, or project work.

Step 5: Next steps session (30mins)

We meet again to walk through the report, answer questions, and explore what might come next on your timeline. You and your team walk away with a shared understanding across your team of where you’re at with data, a set of clear, non-technical recommendations tailored to your size, systems, and stage, anguage you can use to talk about data readiness with boards, funders, or partners and a no-pressure pathway forward.

Whether you’re gearing up for transformation or just want to dip your toe in, this service helps you make confident, informed decisions grounded in your real-world context.
